Paediatric nutrition topics for General Physicians
How pediatric nutrition is tested
Written for DHA, SMLE, DOH, QCHP, OMSB, MOH, NHRA and Kuwait MOH — the same GP licensing mix, not a pediatric nutrition specialist paper.
Nutrition items are feeding in the first six months, vitamin D in the region, rickets, and when failure to thrive is coeliac or cows-milk protein.
Exclusive breastfeeding advice and when to add vitamin D are Gulf-relevant. Rickets is diet plus biochemistry, not immediately a skeletal dysplasia.
Coeliac is IgA-tTG with IgA level, then biopsy talk. Kwashiorkor vs marasmus still appears as a picture/stem pair.
Vitamin D in exclusively breastfed infants?
Supplement. Gulf sunlight does not cancel that item. Rickets biochemistry is low phosphate/high ALP in vitamin D deficiency.
When do you test for coeliac?
Faltering growth, chronic diarrhoea, anaemia, or a high-risk associated disease. Do not start gluten-free before the test if you can help it.
Cow’s milk protein allergy — first step?
A trial of extensively hydrolysed (or amino-acid) formula in the formula-fed infant, and maternal dairy exclusion if breastfed — not a full immunology panel first.
